Following the Italian government’s decision in 1987 to halt nuclear energy development, the company redirected its competencies toward the medical sector, transferring its know-how to the design of safety solutions for nuclear medicine applications. This transition marked the beginning of Comecer’s long-term focus on healthcare technologies.
Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Comecer strengthened its engineering capabilities and expanded its network of research and technology partners, establishing itself as a leading manufacturer of shielded cells and containment systems for the nuclear medicine industry.
From the mid-2000s onward, the company experienced significant international growth, driven by increasing demand for advanced containment and aseptic solutions in regulated pharmaceutical environments.
In 2011, Fondo Italiano d’Investimento, a private equity initiative backed by the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance, acquired a minority stake in Comecer, supporting its industrial development and international expansion.
The company further expanded its technological capabilities in 2012 through the acquisition of Veenstra Instrumenten B.V. (Netherlands) and Vitrae Czech (Czech Republic), strengthening its expertise in electronic systems and software for pharmaceutical and radiopharmaceutical applications.
In 2015, Principia SGR replaced Fondo Italiano d’Investimento as a minority shareholder, continuing to support Comecer’s growth strategy and long-term development.
A major milestone was reached on March 1st, 2019, when Comecer became part of ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc., a global leader in industrial automation. This step integrated the company into an international group and, more specifically, into the ATS Life Sciences ecosystem, reinforcing its position in highly regulated healthcare sectors.
In recent years, Comecer has continued to expand its capabilities and global presence. In 2021, the company acquired DF Siena, further strengthening its offering in specialized production equipment for the pharmaceutical sector.
In 2025, Comecer celebrates its 50th anniversary and opens a new Aseptic Filling Production Center in Barcelona, marking another step in its ongoing growth and commitment to advanced healthcare technologies.
