ATMP Days: a successful premiere for Comecer

Watch the video on YouTube

The first edition of “Regenerative Medicine and Advanced Therapies: state of the art between Industry and Academy” concluded a few days ago at our Castel Bolognese site.

During both days of the convention, protagonists in the field of Advanced Therapies in Italy and Europe discussed the sector’s state of the art, illustrating different fields of application, development requirements and possible paths of use. From different professional areas – hospital care, academics, private research, industry and public administration, participants had the chance to find out more about and interact with speakers, not only on theoretical aspects of the discipline, but also on practical issues experienced and described to the audience, along with implemented solutions. An exchange of information and operative paths which enriched the convention with concrete tips, effectively highlighting the requirements and potential of Advanced Therapies.

The event distinguished itself in virtue of numerous detailed contributions on new therapies and innovative technologies adopted by medicine in the field of somatic therapies, tissue regeneration and the latest advancements in cellular oncological therapies. Guest speeches were followed by a six-item round table session which tackled topics covered during both days in a future perspective, underlining the need for more productive interaction between universities and the world of research, to create competence and professionalism.

The following speakers participated:

  • Stefano Iacovelli, Paediatric Hospital Bambin Gesù, Rome “Paediatric Immunotherapy”
  • Lorenza Lazzari, Milan Polyclinic IRCCS (Institute for Treatment and Research) “The Production of stem cells in the hospital environment”
  • Massimiliano Petrini, IRST (Romagna Scientific Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment), Meldola “Vaccines containing dendritic cells”
  • Cecilia Maini, Aster Bologna “Cooperation between companies and public institutions in advanced therapies”
  • Stefano Baila, Anemocyte “What’s great about being a BMO”
  • Luca Alberici, MolMed “MolMed experience in Cell&Gene therapy manufacturing”
  • Andreas Eberle, CO.DON “A GMP facility of the future implemented in the present”
  • Veronica Albertini, Swiss Stem Cell Biotech “From cord blood to cell manufacturing organization”
  • Maurizio Gelati, IRCCS Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza “Human Neural Stem Cells: possible therapies for motor neurone disease”
  • Assunta Pandolfi, University of Chieti and Pescara “Stem cells from perinatal adnexa”
  • Stefania Mazzoleni, Genenta Science “Tumor microenviroment ImmunoGene Therapy: from bench to bedside”
  • Anna Tampieri, Istec CNR “Materials and regenerative medicine: cellular targeting”
  • Aida Paniccia, Tiget “Bringing gene therapy to the clinic: the SR-Tiget experience”
  • Massimo Dominici, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia “Cellular therapies in oncology”
  • Giuliana Vallanti, MolMed “Different capacities and production methods”
  • Simona Guidi “Introduction to the regulatory world of AT”

Moderated by Guido Romeo, journalist of Il Sole 24Ore, the round table explored concrete topics, such as different production methods and relative costs, requirements, regulatory and legislative differences and lastly, the potential of reaching out to the academic world, to guarantee suitable training for sector professionals.

It was particularly interesting to observe interactions between professionals who despite operating in the same field, speak different or at best highly specific languages when discussing their studied applications.

Lastly, visits to the Comecer production department showed how it is making current technology available to tackle the challenge of bringing regenerative medicine to an increasing number of people.

The event was appreciated by everyone and we hope to repeat it over the years to come. A more in-depth video of the meeting will be shortly published on this page, stay tuned.
